LOVERS OF KITSCH I

This artwork was created for Bad Taste: An Illustration Exhibition which I organised and curated with my illustration collective, Meet The Kawan. For the exhibition, I wanted to explore new possibilities by trying my hand at ceramics for the first time.

Taking inspiration from the childhood memories of growing up with my grandparents, Lovers of Kitsch is my tribute to my grandparents who enjoyed travelling and collecting. Among their expansive collections are the most kitschy objects one could find.

ARTIST STATEMENT

When I think of bad taste, I was always reminded of my grandparent’s house where I grew up in. This series of works was inspired by my exhibition work, “Good Morning” and my childhood memory of my grandparents’ house.

Avid lovers of art, they collected many items during their travels and would frequent flea markets on weekends. Among their collections were oriental tableware and vases, western-looking ceramic dolls, inspirational wall hangings etc. To say their house is the house of kitsch wouldn’t be an exaggeration.

While these ornamental items might look tacky to an outsider, they have brought enormous joy to my grandparents. Using ceramic as my main medium, like most of these items are made of, I tried to recreate this specific piece of memory through objects.
